About Us
Bourbonnais Township was formed May 9, 1853. Prior to that, the township was a part of Will County. In 1853, the Illinois state legislature divided portions of Iroquois and Will County to form Kankakee County. Bourbonnais Township is one of seventeen township governments in Kankakee County, Illinois, USA.
As of the 2010 census, the township population was 40,137 and contained 15,153 housing units. Total area of the township is 42.6 square miles.
In 1981, the Bourbonnais Township Hall was built at 1350 Armour Road. Supervisor Lawrence J. Power, Road Commissioner William C. Hilderbrand and Assessor Jeral Lou Regnier were in office at the time the Township Hall was completed.
Today the Township Hall has three main offices that provide services to township residents. The General Assistance office, which is overseen by the Township Supervisor, provides information, assistance programs and public records. The Assessors Office provides property assessments and assistance with exemptions. The Road District is overseen by the Highway Commissioner is responsible for the roads in Bourbonnais Township that are outside of Village limits.
Township government, established in Providence, Rhode Island in 1636, is the oldest existing unit of government continuing to serve on the North American continent. In Illinois, the township form of government was provided by the Illinois constitution of 1848 when residents in their respective counties were allowed to vote to establish township government.
